Hurricane Force Winds

So I'm constantly in a battle with this little blog.  I think that's why I don't post much anymore.  I want to overshare and treat this space as a sort of journal, but then I also realize that I need to respect my husband and children's privacy.  I also sort of feel like if I share a lot on this blog that it gives people an excuse not to pick up the phone and see how things are going.

But, I really want a little place to document my struggles and triumphs in life.  And just life in general.

Right now things are humming along.  I ran my 6th marathon in Houston a couple of weeks ago.  It was sort of awesome.  I had piss poor training this cycle and sometimes only got my 1 long run in during the week.  I hate excuses though.  I was proud of my time 5:30 flat.  Proud that I took this 35 year old body that has the scars from 3 c-sections over that finish line.  Proud that I took the time to talk to that woman at mile 23 who had just gotten a divorce and who so desperately wanted to beat her ex husbands marathon time and when she realized it wasn't going to happen gave her some inspiration that just finishing a damn marathon is enough.  It's about YOU not him.  We ran together for a bit, drank a sip of the free beer together and then I had to call it.  I had to get a move on.  She ushered me on with tears in her eyes.  So I stopped.  I went back and gave her a hug and told her that she was about to be a marathoner!!!   Who cares what her jackass ex husband did?!  She could do it!  And she did.

So I wrote that little blurb about the marathon....oh, 3 weeks ago.  Forgot to try and find pictures and post it.

Since then things have been fun!  Logan is still doing an arduous ABA schedule.  Isabel had indoor soccer training for a couple of months.  I pulled Logan out of martial arts.  It just wasn't working out.  Hopefully he'll get in his teacher's Jiujitsu class soon.  Izzy is still doing dance and Girl Scouts.  Her outdoor soccer season actually starts this week.

Logan is doing pretty well in school.  We've had a couple of meetings about getting his speech evaluated again.  They did and he still doesn't qualify for in-school therapy.  I'm still pissed about this, but I've tried.  His teacher is fantastic this year and I'm very nervous about next year.  His teacher has assured me that he will do everything he can to get Logan with the right Kinder teacher for him.  The principal at the school is on a medical leave of absence for the rest of the year.  She is absolutely amazing and is one of the main reasons that the school is so highly rated and so well known and sought after....even more so than the newer elementary school in the newer section of very expensive homes.  I hope that gets well and is back next year.

Logan seems to excel at numbers and counting.  He's still very hit or miss with almost everything.  Some days he'll count things up to 30 and will identify most letters.  If you ask him to do these thing though, he will usually tell you the wrong answers.

Brian and I recently watched the Temple Grandin movie.  It was fantastic.  So bittersweet.  We both just watched with our mouths open and were like 'Ho.ly shit.  That's Logan.'  If you get a chance to watch it (it's on Netflicks!) you should.  Claire Danes plays Temple and she knocks it out of the park.  She did so well that I'm really shocked she wasn't nominated for awards.  Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend you watch the movie, especially if you know Logan.  Or really anyone with autism.

Isabel is doing great in Kinder.  She is learning to read and likes to insist that her books sent home by her teacher are too 'babyish' and 'easy' for her.  They aren't, but I can see why she gets bored with them.  She still loves her art projects and has recently started writing sentences and stories, which is adorable.  She got her DARS scores back and is ready for 1st grade!  :-)  She spelled all but 2 of her 32 sight words correctly.  Brian immediately wanted to know which ones she got wrong.  Turns out we hadn't had those on her wall and hadn't been practicing them.  Oops.  Anyway, she did great and we aren't worried about her academically.

We are really working to get her off of her Singular.  The emotional side effects are so nasty and she's been on it for over 3 years straight.  It stinks.  Hopefully we will start to wean her off in April or May and see how the Summer goes.  Fingers crossed she can get at least a few months break.  She actually has an asthma/allergy appointment tomorrow.

Brian and I were able to get away last weekend to San Francisco!  We had an amazing time.  It was the most fun I've had in 3 days in a long time.  I saw some silly commercial that said something like 'vacation brings out the best part in you.' Or maybe it was 'if you're not happy on vacation you're a miserable person.'  Something like that.  Anyway, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time.  Being back in Northern California felt so good.  We got in Friday night and headed over to Mark and Chelsae's house.  They have two cats, so I was fully expecting to have to bag it and head to a hotel last minute.  I took allergy pills beforehand and started taking inhaled steroids, but I was fine!  It was almost like I wasn't allergic to cats!  Brian, poor Brian, did not fare so well.  He was a trooper though.  We stayed up until 1:30am talking and catching up.  I had been up since 4:30am and it was 3:30am Texas time before we went to bed.  Saturday morning we headed out to Berkeley to catch up with Larry and Guillermo and have breakfast with them. We gave sweet Nadia a pat and then headed back over the Bay Bridge into the city.  It took us 40 minutes to cross the damn bridge.

After getting back into the city we headed over to Fort Point.  That was about a 2 1/2 hour haul with traffic.  I'm glad we went though, we had never been.

Saturday night we checked into our hotel and got ready for dinner.  I showered and put on a dress and high heels.  The elevator was a little sketchy, so Brian suggested we take the stairs from our 5th story room.  Um, ok.  So down we went.  As we were heading into the lobby from the carpeted stairs I felt myself falling.  I grabbed the railing as if my life depended on it and ended up turned around with my feet about 6 stairs up from my head.  It was sort of like I was in my own little hurricane or hurricane force wind storm.  It was all slow motion.  I didn't dare let go or I knew I was going to do somersaults down the stairs.  I, of course, got up and laughed it off and strutted out into the streets of San Francisco like the boss I am.  The next day I noticed that I actually had a nice blister on my hand from gripping the damn railing so hard and a lovely bruise on my knee.

After shaking it off we were planning on eating dinner at this place in North Beach known for their seafood.  They didn't take reservations for less than 4 people, so when we got there the wait was 2.5 HOURS long.  Uh, no thanks.  So we headed a couple of feet up the street to another lovely Italian joint and waited just an hour for some good Italian food.  After dinner we headed to this beer bar Brian wanted to go to.  It was fun, but I was getting super tired so we headed back to the hotel shortly after.

Sunday we got up and went for breakfast at the famous Yerba Buena.  It was so fun.  The tables are communal, so you basically sit in any open seat, even if it's a teeny tiny table and you don't know the other couple sitting there.  We sat down next to a couple from Houston.  Small world.  They were very lovely and we enjoyed chatting with them.  After breakfast we did the touristy Fisherman's Warf stuff.  Then we had chowder in bread bowls at Neptune's Palace.  How is sourdough SO freaking good in SF?!  We headed over to Dan and Meredith's house after lunch.

Meredith is probably the world's best hostess.  Ever.  We almost got in a fist fight over her trying to give us their brand new bed to sleep in.  They actually got a new bed the night before because 'Allyson and Brian were coming and our bed was old.'  They won and we claimed their room.  She invited all of the Moms over from Mom's group 2005.  Including Donna!  It was awesome.  I loved seeing all of the kids so grown up.  They all looked the same, just older versions.  I can't say enough how amazing Sunday night was.  Even though I rarely talk to most of the Moms anymore I know they would be there for me and my family if we ever needed anything.  Preben made a homemade Danish (he's from Denmark) and it was heavenly.  I could have eaten the entire thing.  Mer made cupcakes and homemade chocolate mousse.  And Shepard's Pie.  And meatballs.  And sausage.  And stuff for the kids.

My flight was too early Monday morning.  I really wanted to stay and extra couple of days.  I had a terrible nightmare about Izzy Friday night, so I really missed the kids Saturday and was feeling homesick, but by Sunday I was feeling better and ready to relax some more!

Brian stayed in SF for work the rest of the week and made it home late Friday night.  We had a fun weekend celebrating one of my best friends' birthdays, so it was a nice way to cap off a fun couple of weeks.

My parents are also officially hired as babysitters.  Not only did they take awesome care of the kids, but they cleaned out the garage (if you've ever seen our garage you know what a huge task this is), cleaned and vacuumed out my car, did laundry, shuttled the kids around and there was a damn pot roast in the crock pot ready for me!  Amazing.

Disney World!

We had a great trip to DisneyWorld! So fun! We headed out to Houston on Tuesday right after preschool and then loaded up the RV and left for Florida on Wednesday. Wednesday we stopped right outside of Baton Rouge. Thursday it was Madison, Florida and then we made it to Disney on Friday afternoon. I really don't think Isabel had any idea where we were! We headed out to the Magic Kingdom Saturday morning and as we were waiting to head in the gates Isabel looked at the card and said "Why is this a Disney World card?" I guess she was talking about the castle on the front? Anyway, it was funny. She was a little overwhelmed, but very excited to be there. Over the next few days she kept asking me "can you believe that we're at Disney World?!" It was so cute. Jenn's boyfriend, Adam, was able to drive up from West Palm Beach and meet us for 2 nights! He had never been to Disney World either, so it was extra special.

We stayed at MK until nap time around 2:30pm. After naps Brian took Logan over to Jennifer and Greg's room so that I could take Isabel to the Bopidy Boutique to get her hair and makeup done for a special dinner at Cinderella's Royal table at the castle. It was a special, fun night for her. She met Cinderella, Ariel, Snow White, and Jasmine. Jennifer brought Logan to meet us and then we went on the carousel a couple of more times before heading back for the night. Sunday we went over to Animal Kingdom. We did the Safari and then Brian, Jay, Dad, and I did the Matterhorn ride while Jan, Mom and the kids did Dinoland. After naps we went over to Hollywood Studios. We had dinner at the Sci Fi Drive In. It was really cool, although Logan wanted to run around the drive in watching the movie from all angles and checking out all of the cars. After dinner we walked out to the spectacular Spectacle of Lights. It was stunning! There was actual snow that was floating down on top of us. So amazing! The lights were unreal. I could have stayed all night, but the kids were tired and I had a cold, so I took them back. BUT not before Isabel did the Star Wars ride! She is just barely 40 inches!!! This was huge and allowed her to go on some rollercoasters and more intense rides. She did Star Wars and wanted to do more.

On Monday we did Epcot. It was a little bit of a later start. We walked over to lunch in Germany and had some yummy bratwurst. After walking around and checking out the model train for a long time we caught the end of the St. Nik presentation in Canada. We were heading into the Figment ride when I got a text from my sister saying she spotted Princess Aurora and that there wasn't a line to see her! Woohoo! Jackpot! Isabel was SO excited. Cinderella and Aurora are her favorites, although she swears she loves all of the princesses equally. Anyway, it was adorable and we got some cute cute cute pictures. I love Figment, so that was a fun ride. My parents went to the Candlelight Processional after a nice dinner at the French restaurant. They really liked it!

The rest of the crew had dinner at Chef Mickey's and met lots of characters. After dinner Brian took Logan on a ride on the monorail and Jenn and I took Isabel over to Epcot. We ended up only going on the future ride (the one in the golf ball at the front of Epcot). Before we could stop her Izzy touched the button to listen to the entire story in Japanese. Awesome. Jenn had already been on the ride, so she narrated for us. We met Mom and Dad at the end of the ride and then headed back to the RV.

Tuesday we went over to Hollywood Studios and then had nice, long naps in preparation for a long night at the Magic Kingdom. We had dinner at the Crystal Palace. Not sure I would recommend that, but it was ok. The characters were really rushed and I felt like we were being pushed out because they seemed like they were closing. We took Isabel on Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain. She LOVED them! We also saw the parade and the fireworks. It was a long night, but we closed it down! A midnight carousel ride is a must! We said goodbye to Frammy, Papaw, Jennifer, Greg and Lila because they were leaving on Wednesday.

Thursday we did the MK again. Fun! The last minute decision to see Mickey was a great one. Logan was SO excited. Like he almost couldn't handle it, so excited. His little hands and feet were doing his super happy excited dance. I really wished I had it on video. Seeing that sweet boy be so happy about Mickey was so special. He was dancing and just so HAPPY! I know Brian wasn't thrilled when I dragged him in 'just this one last thing!', but he was happy I made him. :-)

After naps we headed to Epcot and did the rides in Mexico and Norway before eating dinner at the Norwegian restaurant. It was so good! Great food and great characters! They even did a princess processional. Isabel took Logan's hand and they did it together. So cute.

We packed up the RV and headed to Pensacola for the night. Friday night was stopped outside of Baton Rouge again and then made it back to The Woodlands around 1:30pm on Saturday. We rested Saturday and had dinner at Rico's. Celebratory fajitas and margaritas were in order! Sunday I aimed to get on the road at 10am. Logan and Brian slept in until about 9am, so I was worried about our early start, but by gosh, we were on the road at 10 o'clock on the dot. Unfortunately in our hasty departure we forgot Brian's toiletry bag. Oops. Luckily he had his glasses on and not his contacts. That would have been a disaster.

Now we're back in our routine and ready for the week before Christmas!

Here are some pictures from my phone. I'll try to post some more a little later on. I think 90000 pictures on the blog might be a little overkill. ;)

Montana 2012

Our Montana trip was so fun!  My parents, the kids, Tank and Fargo (my parent's dog) all headed out in my parent's RV June 18th for our road trip to Montana.

DAY 1

We left around 8am and got into our first stop, Oklahoma City, OK around 4pm.  It was a long day with no naps.  We try to keep the kids strapped into the car seat for as long as possible, so it was a challenging day.  Isabel did pretty well and was content to watch her shows and play on the iPad, but Logan got bored around 8:15am.  We stayed at the same place in Oklahoma as we did on the way back last year.  It was a really nice place with a fun pool/splash pad that we took advantage of.  We swam, ate and the kids went to bed.  This year we decided to put Logan in the pak n play in the back bedroom of the RV (like last year) but instead of my parents sleeping back there I slept in that bed with Isabel.  It was so nice!  I king-sized sleep number bed.  My parents were stuck on the queen bed in the kitchen area.  At least the adults were able to have a glass of wine (or 3) and watch TV while the kids were sleeping.  Last year Isabel was in the pak n play right in the middle of the kitchen and would NOT sleep with the TV on.

Day 2

Once again we were on the road around 8:15am.  The back bedroom folks slept great.  Not sure about the grandparents!  Our destination today was Oakley, Kansas.  Basically in the middle of nowhere. We were following the same route as on our way back to TX from last year, so we knew the place was fun, but WINDY.  Last year they had all of these old school play structure things and a little splash pad.  They also had this really cool barn that had games and was just a place to run around and relax.  Unfortunately this year they were using the barn as a staging and construction area for the pool that was being installed, so it was closed.  :-(  The kids had another sort of challenging day.  Logan slept for 20 minutes total.  That kid just will not sleep in the car.  It is amazing how he fights sleep in vehicles.  The grandparents went to the steakhouse for dinner while I stayed with the kids and had dinner in the RV.  It was SO windy.  All night I kept thinking that at any second the RV would start rocking back and forth listening to the wind howl, but it was rock solid.  Thing didn't move an inch.  I guess that's what happens when it's like 45 feet long.

He road up and down the sidewalk and had a blast!
Windy!  The construction zone and barn are the background.

Day 3

Left around 8:30am today.  Headed for Fort Collins, CO.  I was really looking forward to this campground.  Getting into the mountains, cooler weather, fresher air, etc.  We arrived and I went for a 3.5 mile jog.  SO nice!  They had a really nice pool and a great little play house and playground.  We met a little friend and played for a while before hitting the pool.  The pool was pretty cold.  I just got my legs wet, but the kids and Grandma took a splash!

Day 4

Got going a little earlier today due to the time change.  I think we were on the road by 7:15am or so.  Today's destination:  Buffalo, WY!  I really loved this RV park too.  Such a great little gift shop, pool and playground.  The town is really fun to see too, but this trip we skipped the trip in to walk around.  The pool was looking amazing though.  I think they must drain and paint it every year!  We swam for a long time.

Day 5

Montana!!!

Finally a little chilly!
Stop at the Bass Pro Shop for shopping and lunch.

Yesssss!

OMG....he slept for about an hour!

Great Falls
We stayed in Great Falls for a few days to get acclimated to the altitude a bit before headed up into the mountains and to do some grocery shopping and laundry.
They had so much fun running the cars up and down the incline.

BRAVE!
In the Mountains
This year we spent the majority of the time on vacation in the mountains at the cabins and I loved it!  We did head into Lincoln often and made a trip to Missoula and the girls headed back to Great Falls one day to watch Magic Mike.  GGB told us that we had to see it if we wanted to stay in the family.  She is serious about her Channing Tatum.  I'll photo bomb this post now.

Back in GF.  We headed back in to Great Falls to get ready to fly back to Austin.  Aunt Cathy got tickets to see the stock car races.  Isabel had an absolute blast and REALLY got into it.  She still talks about how she cheers for the 'number 3 car.'  Logan...not so much.  He loved Uncle Mike walking him around and letting him play and sit on things, but sitting in the stands.  Not going to happen.  I took him home after about an hour.  Isabel stayed for the entire thing and got home at 11 pm!  We had our flight the following morning, so I was a little worried about how she would do being so tired, but both kids did GREAT!  I mean, it was seriously the best possible flights I could imagine.  It was a lot of work to keep them both happy, but we did it!  Usually we try our best, but sometimes (always) we can't prevent a screaming fit or meltdown.  This time I seriously could have cried from happiness at the end.  Besides our gate checked roller for the 30+ lb car seat we carried on getting checked through to Austin, it was a perfect travel day.  We were pretty pissed about that who mishap, especially since Brain doubled checked with the gate agent in Great Falls to make sure we had it on our 3.5 hour layover in Denver after the lady said 'you don't need this in Denver, do you?'  Brain was like 'uh, we absolutely need that in Denver.'  Can't win them all.

Eating by ourselves (without Daddy and Logan) because of the cluster eff that is Frontier's gate agents.  Thanks guys.  Great work.  Way to screw up the gate check.

Tired boys.

Partying girls.

Sooo...it was such a great trip!  Glad that we flew home though.  I think we were all ready to get back and into a routine again.  Waking up between 5-6am and going to bed well after 9pm did not make for rested kids (or adults).  I'm sure Grandma and Grandpa appreciated getting to enjoy the trip back to TX by themselves.  Almost 4 weeks straight of a 2 and 3 year old 24/7 is a lot for anyone but parents to handle.  This trip we brought too many shorts and not enough long pants!  Also, too many jackets.  Hopefully I can pack better next year.  It gets better each year, so fingers crossed next year we actually use everything we bring.

I think Grandma and Grandpa might be coming up this week with the rest of our crap that we left in the RV.  Namely warm clothes and toys.  I know Logan will freak when he sees his motorcycle!  THANK YOU Grandma and Grandpa for letting us tag along and mooch off of you guys!  Huge thanks to Grandma and GGB for watching Logan and Isabel so that we could work on things and go for bike rides!
